#MiRuralCareMatters

In Michigan’s rural communities, hospitals provide vital access to healthcare services, improving the health status of residents who may otherwise forgo care due to transportation challenges.

These hospitals face unique funding challenges that can threaten the care and services they provide. Despite these challenges, they often serve as the largest employer and backer of community improvement efforts.

Communities Matter

1-of-4

Median number of residents enrolled in Medicaid in counties where CAHs are located.

  • CAHs provide physician primary care & outpatient services.
  • CAHs deliver life-saving & emergency care.
  • CAHs foster community partnership to ensure the health & wellness of residents in rural communities.
  • Rural residents in Michigan are more likely to be covered by public health insurance, and the aging populations in rural communities throughout the state create unique challenges when it comes to healthcare and economies.

Jobs Matter*

3-billion

Total direct, indirect and induced impact of CAHs on Michigan jobs.

  • CAHs employ 70-750 people in their communities.
  • CAHs provided 10,000 direct jobs in Michigan.
  • Direct jobs alone generated $645 million in wages, salaries and benefits.

State Funding Matters

hospital

Rural hospitals often face unique financial challenges that can threaten the care and services they provide, including rising costs, demographic shifts and workforce challenges.

Due to the populations they serve and the services they provide, CAHs are typically reimbursed for Medicaid at lower rates than other hospitals. Michigan’s Medicaid payment policy should be adjusted to ensure parity of payment levels for ALL Michigan hospitals.
